Week of September 18-22
Updates from our week at Diamond Creek
A huge thank you to all of our parents who have volunteered to help with our Hurricane Harvey drop off this weekend. Please read below for details about the drop off as well as supplies that will be sent to the areas effected by Hurricane Harvey.
This week we had our Student Council elections! Hats off to all of our students who showed courage by running for one of the elected positions on our Student Council. I was so proud of our students for the time they spent advertising, making their election videos and posters. I look forward to the leadership that our Student Council will bring our student body this year.
Our School Site Council also met this last week. Our School Site Council is a team comprised of elected parents, teachers and staff members. This is a mandated State funded program where parents are elected to represent fellow parents in making decisions with the school staff on school wide topics. Issues such as school safety, parking, use of instructional aides, curricular programs being considered for adoption, and determining how some school improvement activities occur are important topics usually discussed by a Site Council. In a sense, the Council is like a rudder of a ship helping to point out the ship’s direction. All Site Council minutes and agendas are posted on our school website.
Our Walk-a-Thon is coming up this Friday, September 22nd!! Sami Circuit will be joining us again this year while the students walk around our black top area. This is a fun morning for our students. Thank you to all who have volunteered already to help with this event. The money raised from our Walk-a-Thon has been designated to technology within our building. Our goal is to continue to add Apple TV packages into our classrooms.

Coming up this weekend on September 15th-17th from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm you will be able to drop off supplies that we will be sending to the Central Texas Food Bank which is the closest food bank that has not been effected by Hurricane Harvey. UPS and Thrivent have teamed with us to provide a set amount of shipping supplies and money to ship the packages. If you are interested in donating supplies to the victims of Hurricane Harvey, here is a list of items we are collecting:
POP TOP food (they do not have homes or stoves to cook on right now)
Canned Chicken
Canned Tuna
Apple Sauce
Baby Formula
Canned Soups
Hygiene Supplies - toothbrushes, toothpaste, wipes, diapers (adult & baby).
Thank you for your support and help, I am honored to work in such an amazing community.
Attendance
Attendance is very important to us at Diamond Creek. Students miss valuable instructional time when they are absent from school. Did you know?
• Starting in kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
• Missing 10 percent (or about 18 days) can make it harder to learn to read.
• Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two days every few weeks.
• Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
• Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.
In the state of California an absence is considered excused if the student is absent due to illness, medical appointment or a religious holiday. Leaving to go out of town is not considered an excused absence.
Morning Safety Patrol
To help keep our students safe in the morning we are asking for any volunteers who are interested in being crossing guards. Each morning we would love to have one crossing guard to help with the area right by our drop off loop. If you are able or interested in volunteering during this time, please fill out the form linked below and Mrs. Garcia will contact you with dates and times. Thank you
