Welcome to the 2017-18 School Year!
What's Coming Up This Week? August 21-25
Welcome to the 2017-18 school year and to our Diamond Creek school blog! This blog will be updated and included in a messenger to parents every Friday. Please read our blog for important information and upcoming dates.
Our staff have been hard at work this week preparing for an awesome first day of school for your child. We hope you enjoyed meeting your child's teacher at TK/K orientation or at the ice cream social. Thank you to our PTC for providing ice cream for our families. The first two days of school were a true success! As I walked through the classrooms, students were smiling, laughing and enjoying their time with friends and their teachers. Thank you for helping us kick off a great school year! We hope your child felt like a rock star on the first day and was excited to come back for Day #2!
This week make sure to join us for our Back to School Night on August 24th (times listed below) to hear all about your child's classroom! Mrs. Garcia will also be giving a welcome and overview if you are interested in attending. Students will be dismissed at 2:05 on this day. Regular day for TK and Kindergarten students. New this year we will also have two food trucks at Back to School Night so COME HUNGRY as 10% goes directly back to our students at Diamond Creek. The food trucks will be here from 5:00-8:00.

Diamond Creek Homework Commitments
Last year our Diamond Creek staff participated in some reading, research and discussion around homework. Together we created the following commitments that we will be following in regards to homework this year. Each grade level will have a sub list of their own commitments that pertain to the age and curriculum of the grade level. These will be shared at Back to School Night.
Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
All of our 3rd through 5th grade students will have the opportunity to bring their own device to Diamond Creek this year. We had three classrooms last spring that piloted this for us as our district is now a BYOD district. You can visit the links below for more information from our district.

Diamond Creek Homework Commitments
Our Diamond Creek staff is revisiting our philosophy and approach to homework. In doing so we have committed to:
- Every student will read each night at an amount appropriate to the grade level.
- We will not have negative consequences for incomplete homework.
- We will be purposeful about the homework we do assign
- Homework is connected to a classroom topic and meaningful
- Homework is review of a concept taught in class
- Amount of focused homework time determined by grade level

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is an initiative that enables students of the Roseville City School District to bring their own device from home to enhance their educational experience. This initiative allows for more of our students in the district to have a device to use during classroom instruction.
Solar Eclipse - August 21st, 2017
On August 21, 2017 the moon will pass between the earth and the sun for the first coast-to-coast total solar eclipse since 1918. Millions of Americans in 12 states will be able to watch this solar spectacle that will turn day into night for a couple of minutes. Our students will be in school during this event and our educators will take full advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime happening to make it a tremendous learning experience for our students. NASA approved safety glasses have been ordered and all teachers will be trained on methods of safe viewing of an eclipse, complete with warnings regarding attempts to watch this event without protecting one’s eyes. We look forward to this extraordinary event and making it a positive learning experience for everyone!
Please make sure to tell your child not to look directly at the sun during this event, or attempt to observe the eclipse without adult supervision and guidance. They should closely follow teacher instructions during the eclipse, especially those involving eye and eyewear safety.
If you have questions about the activities that will be conducted at your child’s school, or wish to have your student refrain from participating in these activities, please contact the school office and let them know.
